News – Whistleblowers & Activists

“If you are going to become a whistleblower, you must realize first of all that you’re going to receive death threats, and these are very serious death threats.  You are going to lose your job.  Your children are not going to get a job or go to university.  It is a family sacrifice as well as yours.”  Barrie Trower (source @ 28:40)

What Else Should I Know?

Whistleblowers & Activists, the List of the Harmed, SLAPP

What happens when you blow the whistle on dangerous, immoral or unethical behaviour by a company or government?  What happens when you stand up for yourself and others?  What happens if you don’t (or can’t) stand up for yourself?  Look and learn.

Moyer, Randy - USA / Oil & Gas Industry

Randy is an experienced truck driver living in Portage, Pennsylvania who was working for the oil and gas industry (Curry Supply) when he was exposed to waterborne chemicals at the worksite in 2011(?) (frackwater got into his boot). Randy’s health was severely affected and now he speaks out against fracking.  He can no longer work because he is in constant pain from migraines, skin rashes, stomach pains, shortness of breath, swelling (sometimes his face and tongue swells so that he can barely breathe and must go to the hospital).  He has seen many doctors but so far without a successful cure.  For some reason (why?) the industry is withholding his worker’s compensation and has removed his medical coverage so Randy and his son have a daily financial struggle to survive.

Thunberg, Greta

In December 2018 Greta Thunberg was 15 years old.  Hailing from Sweden, Greta addressed the U.N. plenary in Katowice, Poland on behalf of climate justice condemning inaction in the face of pending climate crisis and encouraging action to stop using fossil fuels and #KeepItInTheGround.  Link to Greta’s speech via Democracy Now.

Excerpt at 56:00 mins:

“You only talk about moving forward with the same bad ideas that got us into this mess.  Even when the only sensible thing to do is pull the emergency brake.

You are not mature enough to tell it like it is.  Even that burden you leave to us children.

But I don’t care about being popular.  I care about climate justice and the living planet.  Our civilization is being sacrificed for the opportunity of a very small number of people to continue making enormous amounts of money.  Our biosphere is being sacrificed so that rich people in countries like mine can live in luxury.  It is the sufferings of the many which pay for the luxuries of the few.”

MNR tries to stop grassroots home building in “unorganized Indian settlement land”

With the advent of the internet and almost instantaneous global communication, privacy and digital rights have become a major issue. The internet has become a significant replacement/media for verbal and written communication (phone, mail), research, news, art, innovation, education, entertainment, employment, investment, financial and retail opportunities.  It is the backbone for convergence (the coming together of technologies -- computers, telephones, appliances, vehicles, etc.).  It is an essential service for the technically savvy younger generation who use the internet continuously throughout the day.

Traditional information sharing fields have had inherent limits like paper (newspapers, books) or closed network (telephone, post office). Traditional information libraries (documents, books, videos) were not conducive to quick, massive, dissemination. The internet has changed the traditional paradigm by removing natural barriers.

Therefore, it falls to the contemporary world to define the technology parameters of virtual access, use, and data sharing.  Whistleblowers like Edward Snowden, Chelsea Manning and Julian Assange are pushing the technology discussion, in addition to a conversation about government:  Do the responsibilities and rights of government (USA in this case) align with the expectations of the governed (government of the people, by the people, for the people)?
