Dr. Thompson, William – USA / Healthcare
Dubbed the “CDC Whistleblower”, Dr. William Thompson a Senior Scientist at the Center for Disease Control in the USA admitted to omitting statistically significant information in a 2004 article he co-authored that was published in the journal Pediatrics. He said that the omitted data suggested that African American males who received the MMR vaccine before age 36 months were at increased risk for autism. (Full statement .pdf)

Thunberg, Greta – Sweden / Climate Change
In December 2018 Greta Thunberg was 15 years old. Hailing from Sweden, Greta addressed the U.N. plenary in Katowice, Poland on behalf of climate justice condemning inaction in the face of pending climate crisis and encouraging action to stop using fossil fuels and #KeepItInTheGround. “You only talk about moving forward with the same bad ideas that got us into this mess. Even when the only sensible thing to do is pull the emergency brake.
You are not mature enough to tell it like it is. Even that burden you leave to us children.
But I don’t care about being popular. I care about climate justice and the living planet. Our civilization is being sacrificed for the opportunity of a very small number of people to continue making enormous amounts of money. Our biosphere is being sacrificed so that rich people in countries like mine can live in luxury. It is the sufferings of the many which pay for the luxuries of the few.”
Comment: Greta received worldwide attention and acclaim for her stance. She also received a lot of mean criticism, surprisingly, much of it from men. It was remarkable to see an almost concerted effort to undermine Greta through personal attacks on her looks, intelligence, upbringing, and intentions. Explanations of the phenomenon ranged from the idea that men were taking Greta’s words as personal affronts so they took the defensive position of attack, to misogyny that simply couldn’t bear an influential female. In Canada, both explanations were bolstered when the federal Environment Minister, Catherine McKenna, was recognized for the amount of abuse she withstood including being called “Climate Barbie” and peaking with the government’s introduction of a carbon tax.
