Climate Change

The foremost political and media touted issue of our time (interrupted by COVID-19) is “climate change” (formerly “global warming” formerly “climate cooling”).

The climate has always changed and will continue to do so.

The planet is in a warming period (versus an ice age), and it has been theorized that climate change has been accelerated by greenhouse gases released by human-caused fossil fuel combustion.

The issue of human-caused (aka anthropogenic) climate change is controversial and hotly criticized although the mainstream media plays down all serious opposition to the proponents. (AO News - Censorship)

According to the dictionary greenhouse gases are defined as: Any of the atmospheric gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect by absorbing infrared radiation produced by solar warming of the Earth's surface. They include carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄), nitrous oxide (NO₂), water vapour and fluorocarbons.

Yet carbon dioxide (CO₂) is required by plants to survive.

The natural composition of air is 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen and 1% other gases (including carbon dioxide, hydrogen,) so in such small quantities how can “other gases” be that bad? How can human impact be isolated from volcanic impact?

Why Carbon Dioxide (CO₂)?

To make any decision pollution must be measured, and the mainstream considers carbon dioxide (CO₂) an indicator of fossil fuel combustion and pollution. Theoretically, CO₂ emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels are outstripping the natural CO₂ removal processes that keep the atmosphere in equilibrium.

“Whenever you burn conventional fuel, you create carbon dioxide. [....] The carbon dioxide is invisible, it is transparent, you can’t smell it, it is not dangerous to health, so why should one worry about it? Carbon dioxide has a strange property. It transmits visible light, but it absorbs the infrared radiation which is emitted from the earth. Its presence in the atmosphere causes a greenhouse effect [....] It has been calculated that a temperature rise corresponding to a 10 per cent increase in carbon dioxide will be sufficient to melt the icecap and submerge New York. While the debate rages on about whether climate change is anthropogenic, the issue clouds other key factors – resource over-use, waste, destruction and resulting pollution. Whatever you believe about the source of climate change, fossil fuels and resource extraction are responsible for significant levels of pollution (emissions, tailings ponds, water contamination). Thus, reducing or ceasing fossil fuel production, transportation and use is presented by concerned citizens as a solution for climate change AND pollution. To that end, various countries are attempting to break their reliance on fossil fuels (alternative energy, carbon tax).

It is also coming to light that technology has enabled governments to alter weather, which they are undoubtedly doing both for good and ill (weather wars, climate engineering).

Generally, developing countries are more vulnerable to excessive weather conditions (storms, floods, droughts) than developed countries. When it is argued that developed countries have accelerated climate change, the implication is that the developed countries are responsible and so “owe” the developing countries. Some people think the climate change issue requires proof and a measure of the level of human impact, however, ultimately the dispute is immaterial. The real questions are “what should we do about it?”, “how much should we help other countries?” and “how much do we spend?”.

Importantly, it should be noted that the climate change/fossil fuel controversy obfuscates recognition that our human population appears to be growing beyond the resources of the planet. Simply, we must stop destroying the world’s environment (deliberately or accidentally) if we want to survive.

There is no final answer. We are making this up as we go so do your own research, make up your own mind, and act in the way your conscience dictates. Whatever decisions we make, our offspring will live (or die) with them.

The immense scope of politicized “climate change” rather than “pollution” or “weather war” seems to make the problem impossible to deal with. Yet, as the old saying goes, “one can eat an elephant one bite at a time”. Don’t lose hope. Fight one problem at a time.
