General News – Activists, Journalists, Protests, Protesters & Whistleblowers
With the advent of the internet and almost instantaneous global communication, privacy and digital rights have become a major issue. The internet has become a significant replacement/media for verbal and written communication (phone, mail), research, news, art, innovation, education, entertainment, employment, investment, financial and retail opportunities. It is the backbone for convergence (the coming together of technologies -- computers, telephones, appliances, vehicles, etc.). It is an essential service for the technically savvy younger generation who use the internet continuously throughout the day.
Traditional information sharing fields have had inherent limits like paper (newspapers, books) or closed network (telephone, post office). Traditional information libraries (documents, books, videos) were not conducive to quick, massive, dissemination. The internet has changed the traditional paradigm by removing natural barriers.
Therefore, it falls to the contemporary world to define the technology parameters of virtual access, use, and data sharing. Whistleblowers like Edward Snowden, Chelsea Manning and Julian Assange are pushing the technology discussion, in addition to a conversation about government: Do the responsibilities and rights of government (USA in this case) align with the expectations of the governed (government of the people, by the people, for the people)?
