2018 Monsanto was taken over by Bayer AG. Bayer has plans to rename “the most
hated company in the world”.

Dicamba

everything except crops that are genetically engineered to resist it (“Xtend”
soybeans and cotton)

plants exposed to the chemical are left wrinkled, cupped or stunted in growth

in Missouri,
USA where farmers have been forced to use Xtend because their neighbours use
it, use is so extensive that the trees are showing symptoms of injury by the
growth regulator herbicide (source)

the herbicide
·

Glyphosate (aka “Round Up”)
Roundup is a
herbicide with the primary ingredient being glyphosate. Glyphosate works by
preventing plants from being able to make the proteins they need to survive. Since
virtually all plants make these essential proteins the same way, glyphosate
affects nearly all plants. Currently corn, soy, canola, alfalfa, cotton, and
sorghum, (wheat is under-development) are “Roundup ready”. This means that the
plants have been genetically modified to resist Roundup. Thus, these plants
are unaffected when Roundup is applied and the weeds alone are impacted.
Roundup is
also a desiccant used to dry-down crops such as sugar cane, chickpeas, lentils,
barley, beans, peas, mustard, flax, canola, wheat, and oats especially in northern

Glyphosate is
also sprayed on B.C.
and New Brunswick forest
areas post-logging to kill broad-leaf species that might inhibit the growth of replanted
pine seedlings. The
result is reduced plant diversity, leading to monocropped forests that are vulnerable
to more frequent and destructive wildfires and beetle infestations. (source)
However, it
should be noted that some weeds are becoming Roundup tolerant (“superweeds”) so
it is unclear how many more years glyphosate will be effective.
Additionally,
since a large percentage of corn is “Roundup Ready” and corn is used extensively
as animal feed, there are studies that indicate meat and dairy contain
measurable amounts of glyphosate (article).
There are also studies that have shown that there are already measurable
amounts of glyphosate in human urine. (article)
Monsanto is
working on a Roundup Ready alfalfa, but the wisdom is generally questioned
because alfalfa is a perennial plant, so it grows year after year. When a
farmer wants to rotate his crops, Roundup won’t work to kill the re-growth of
alfalfa so what herbicide will he use instead, and how strong will it have to
be?

is 47% glyphosate.
The
Ministry of Natural Resources sprays forests with Monsanto's VisionMax. It
weeds out hardwood stands and broadleaf undergrowth so that pulp and paper
companies can make more profit by promoting softwood growth. Blueberries in spray
zones are deemed inedible.

younger than six, the David Suzuki Foundation says after reviewing poison
control records across the country

Runoff
is water from rain or melted snow which is not absorbed and held by the soil
but runs over the ground and through loose soil. Agricultural runoff is water
leaving farm fields because of rain, melted snow or irrigation. As runoff
moves, it picks up and carries pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers and other pollution,
which it can deposit into ponds, lakes, coastal waters and underground sources
of drinking water.
Food for Thought
Even
though the Monsanto protection act (USA) is in place and even though Monsanto
is known for its brutal attack of patent infringement, typically leading to expensive
court battles for the farmer, there is light at the end of the tunnel that will
affect Monsanto in ways unknown.
All
the farmer has to do is identify cross contaminated GM crops on their natural
and organic farms and make a formal written demand to Monsanto to come and
remove those plants before Monsanto makes a claim of patent infringement.
"If
Monsanto refuses, and demands the farmer to not touch those plants, under jurisdiction
of patent rights, the farmer can exorcise it's right to tell Monsanto their plants
are on the farmers property and therefore trespasses"
If
Monsanto refuses to collect its property, the farmer can have it removed and
send Monsanto the bill for removal. If Monsanto refuses the bill, the farmer can
take Monsanto to small claims court and will be granted the amount and avoid
any gag clause Monsanto is famous for during negotiations with suits against
people they fight.
While
this may seem simple enough and it is, it is an example of how little farmers
are in the know how to forearm themselves and beat Monsanto before they get dragged
into a situation that typically causes great harm to the heritage the farmer
has built.
