Lac-Mégantic Derailment
On July 6, 2013 an unmanned Maine railway oil train got loose, derailed and exploded in the heart of Lac-Mégantic. The derailment and ensuing fire destroyed much of the downtown core and forced 2,000 of roughly 6,000 residents from their homes in the small Quebec town. The Montreal, Maine and Atlantic Railway was forced into bankruptcy, and eventually emerged as Central Maine and Quebec Railway under new ownership.
