Trans Mountain Expansion Proposal (TMX)
Formerly owned by Kinder Morgan before being purchased by the Canadian federal government (Trudeau), the Trans Mountain pipeline project is seeking to twin the existing pipeline where possible, within the existing right of way between Strathcona County, Alberta to to Burnaby, British Columbia. The project plans to add new pump stations along the route, increase the number of storage tanks at existing facilities and increase the capacity from 300,000 to 890,000 barrels per day. Although the project has been described as a "twinning" of an existing pipeline, part of the expansion would include a different route through the Rocky Mountains to the coast. (article)
Proponents say the project would create about 90 permanent jobs and employ 4,500 people at the peak of construction. (article)
Opponents are concerned due to the age of the existing pipeline (60 years), the risk of the content (transporting raw bitumen), whether First Nations treaties were originally honoured and are still being honoured. Also potential adverse impacts on vegetation, old-growth forests, wildlife; as well as the impacts of the seven-fold increase in tanker traffic on the ocean and orca whales.

First Nations
The pipeline is slated to go through 15 First Nations reserves and 80 First Nations territories without consent, including the Coldwater Band, which has vowed to fight the pipeline. (AO First Nations News)
