Oil & Gas Pipelines News
TransCanada Keystone XL
TransCanada (website) proposed the Keystone XL pipeline expansion to carry Alberta oil sands crude over 1,897km (1,179 miles) to the U.S. Gulf coast. Phase I planned is to run from Hardisty, Alberta to Steele City, Nebraska. American and Canadian producers and U.S. refiners have committed to using the proposed pipeline for 17-18 years. The Canadian governments are on board. Land expropriation (eminent domain) in the U.S.A. is underway and pipeline is being laid in the southern states. However, at this time the U.S. President has not given the go-ahead for the northern leg. There is a strong anti-Keystone XL lobby due to environmental and social costs.
Around Dec-2013 southern Keystone XL pipeline rebranded “Gulf Coast Pipeline” (article).
In November 2015 President Barak Obama vetoed and rejected the north leg of the Keystone XL pipeline crossing from Canada into the United States. (article)
In January 2016 TransCanada started the proceedings to sue the US government as well as make a claim under NAFTA. (article)
In January 2017 newly elected President Trump acts to advance Keystone XL. (article)
In March 2019 President Trump issues presidential permit (not subject to environmental review) for Keystone XL (article)
