Canada’s Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID)

Introduced by the Canadian federal government in June 2016, the Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) program was originally an alternative option for terminally ill people so they could avoid a painful death and die with dignity. However, the MAID parameters have been widening so citizens have been euthanized for depression, hearing loss, autism, poverty, and homelessness. The government is seeking to expand MAID to include children (“mature minors”) and infants. A study points out that the healthcare system is saving millions of dollars a year by euthanizing patients rather than treating them. (source)

The federal government’s original plan was that by March 17, 2024, people with mental illness as their sole underlying medical condition will be eligible for MAID. (article) That plan was delayed until 2027. (article)
