Agriculture News – Beef Industry
Canada's livestock producers and processors
have built a strong reputation for delivering high-quality, safe and delicious
beef. The Government of Canada remains committed to investing in growth for
Canadian beef producers and this vital industry. (website)
·
Beef production contributes approximately $21.8
billion to Canada's GDP (2018-2020 Statistics Canada/Canfax averages).
·
In 2021, Canada exported 508 million kilograms
of beef to international markets, valued at $4.47 billion.
·
Canada is one of the top ten beef producing
nations globally producing 2% of the world’s beef supply in 2022.
According to the 2021 Census of
Agriculture, there are more than 60,000 farms and ranches in Canada with beef
cattle.
Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE)
“Given this new evidence that the BSE
agent is still circulating in Canada’s animal feed system, it is more likely
than not that Canada’s inferior testing program has failed to detect many other
BSE-infected cattle, including asymptomatic cattle entering Canada’s food
system,” R-CALF USA CEO Bill Bullard (source)
BSE – more commonly known as mad cow
disease – is a progressive, fatal neurological disease believed to be spread
when cattle eat protein rendered from the brain and spines of infected cattle
or sheep. Canada banned that practice of feeding in 1997. (article)
BSE has a long incubation period, about 2.5 to 8 years, usually affecting adult
cattle at a peak age onset of four to five years, all breeds being equally
susceptible (wikipedia).
[Prions vs bacteria vs virus (no proof that
any virus exists)?]
Unlike other nations that instituted
mandatory testing requirements for cattle entering the food chain after
detecting multiple cases of classical BSE, Canada relies only on a voluntary
testing program. The mandatory testing programs in the European Union and Japan successfully removed BSE-infected cattle that were entering the food system even
though the infected cattle did not show any signs of the disease. This is
because testing can identify BSE-positive cattle several months prior to the
animal exhibiting any signs of neurological disorder. (source)
In 1996, researchers confirmed that BSE
(bovine spongiform encephalopathy) can infect people as variant known as
Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.
A BSE case is considered “atypical” if the
animal contracted the neurological disease spontaneously instead of through
contaminated meat-and-bone meal.
UPDATE: June 5, 2019 CDC reports that BSE
surveillance since 1993 has identified 26 cases in North America: Six BSE
cases were in the United States and 20 in Canada. Of the six cases identified
in the United States, one was born in Canada. One of the 20 cases identified in
Canada was imported from the United Kingdom. (source)
Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD)
CWD - there is growing concern in the
scientific and public health community that chronic wasting disease, which is
killing deer in Minnesota, Wisconsin and elsewhere in the USA; Alberta,
Saskatchewan, Quebec could jump to people some day. (article)
