TC Energy
TC Energy (formerly TransCanada Corporation) is one of the largest natural gas distribution companies in North America. The company has a leading position in the Western Sedimentary Basin (WCSB) and the Appalachia basin in the U.S. northeast in addition to the Marcellus and Utica basin, and the Montney/Duvernay. TransCanada has almost 91,000 kms / 56,900 miles of natural gas pipelines in North America – enough to circle the earth twice. The company transports more than 25% of North Americans’ – Canada, U.S.A. and Mexico – daily natural gas-fueled energy requirements. (source)

TransCanada Pipeline’s Energy East Project
Alberta’s major oil players are revenue limited by the lack of access to the world market where oil prices are roughly 30% higher (in 2013). As a result, the companies are striving to move as much oil to the coast for export as possible and are investigating different transportation alternatives including rail and pipelines, new and existing.
TransCanada’s “Energy East” proposal would utilize a mostly existing pipeline from Alberta to the Atlantic seaboard ending where a new deep-water marine terminal would be built to export the crude overseas. The $12 billion development plan calls for converting 1,864 miles (4,600km) of an existing, 55-year-old pipeline currently used for natural gas to carry the oil. In early August 2013, TransCanada said it received the long-term contracts for about 900,000 barrels of crude per day and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has already indicated his support for the project. (article)
80% of the pipeline (between Saskatchewan and Quebec) already exists and it would need to be extended on either end: in the west to connect the pipe to Hardisty, Alberta; and in the east it would be extended to either Montreal, Quebec City, or St. John (Irving refinery), NB—pending approvals and finalized shipping contracts.
Opponents object because: (i) old pipelines fail, (ii) oil/bitumen is thicker and requires greater pressure than natural gas (for which the pipeline was built), (iii) a 1,864 mile long pipeline jeopardizes key water sources, rivers, lakes and dependents should it leak, (iv) based on industry performance to-date the odds of a leak are good, (v) there is not enough refining capacity in eastern Canada and no plans for an increase refining capacity to warrant the levels of bitumen being transported, which means that bitumen has to be exported/imported to be useful to Eastern Canadians, (vi) Canadians should not undertake excessive risk simply to export product and increase oil company profits. Many feel that Canada should decrease its dependence on fossil fuels entirely and would like to see the massive subsidies given to the oil industry invested in renewable energy alternatives.
Update: 3-Sep-2014
Greenpeace objects because “the St. Lawrence River, where TransCanada wants to build a supertanker port to export oil from this pipeline, is a beluga whale calving area. Beluga whales are listed as a “threatened” species and drilling near their calving habitat would be devastating for their dwindling population.” Link to Petition
