Kelowna, B.C.
We’re excited to be part of Canada’s first 5G smart city pilot project with Rogers & University of British Columbia. 3D sensors in two locations in Kelowna will gather anonymous & protected data about how we move around downtown. UBC research students will use the data to help us learn more about how we get around, plus uncover ways to make travel modes safer. #OKGNtech #smartcity #exploreKelowna UBC Okanagan

*We appreciate the time everyone took to comment and provide feedback on this program. We think it would be helpful to clarify some details about the technology that’s being used. To set the record straight: the LiDAR sensors (provided by Blue City Technology, a Canadian company) gather anonymous 3D representations of objects at intersections – the resolution is so low that the data contains no identifiable information or facial recognition by nature, and is not a camera; and any technologies put in the public sphere strictly adhere to the science-based exposure limits outlined in the Safety Code 6 - Health Canada’s Radiofrequency (RF) Exposure Guidelines (https://bit.ly/2XBW38A) – the sensors will be powered by an existing Rogers 5G network (one tower with three 5G radios leveraging the 2.5 GHz spectrum). This research pilot project is NOT about surveillance; it’s about finding ways to make travel safer, no matter the mode. There is no Huawei technology being employed in the project. And, as a pilot, this project will run for a limited time to assess the capabilities and benefits of this type of technology.
