“The Ontario agri-food sector contributes more than $34 billion to the provincial economy and employs more than 700,000 people.” Ontario Serves Up Local Food Bill news release (25-Mar-2013)
There is more to farming than the simple job of growing food or raising animals.
For the farmer, it’s a lifestyle, a calling, a deep commitment, a living.
For city-folk, it’s an offering of food on Styrofoam trays, in paper bags, frozen or in tin cans as reliable and right as the dawning of a new day or the approach of a glittering night.
For country-folk, it’s an awareness and appreciation for clean air, pristine water, fresh food and good earth.
Each has their views, which perhaps surprisingly, often conflicts, although the goal is the same.
We all have to eat. We all need to live. The future of farming must be sustainable.
In 2012, Ottawa area farmer, Anthony Scissons, sold live lambs to 3 Muslim men who (in accordance with Dhabihah) proceeded to slaughter the animals on the farm for their own use.
The Ministry of Natural Resources, reacting to a complaint filed by a local Muslim slaughterhouse, charged the farmer with running an illegal slaughterhouse, selling un-inspected meat and failing to have the animal inspected before and after slaughter.
The Muslim men were not charged.
Constitutional Charter challenges have been made under sections 2, 8, and 15. Section2 deals with freedom of religion, section 8 with illegal search and seizure and section15 with equal treatment under the l aw. (article)
At issue is whether people have the right to slaughter animals for their own use.
