Proposed Ramara Township Quarry & Soil Remediation Facility

NRK Holdings Inc. has proposed a new quarry and soil remediation facility.  After the limestone is extracted the hole would be used to remediate petroleum-based soil through the process of bioremediation.

Opponents point out potential problems downstream: “the creek that runs through the NRK Holdings Inc. property runs into the Head River, which runs into the Black River, which runs into the Severn River and down to Georgian Bay”.  Rama First Nation noted that the proponent never consulted with them and that aboriginal hunting and fishing rights would be in jeopardy if the watershed were contaminated.  Rama has committed to source water protection under the provincial Clean Water Act.

Proponents are in favour of the much-needed jobs and money the facility will bring.

Council approved the official plan amendment and zoning bylaw amendment for the quarry but denied the application for the soil remediation facility in July 2013.

*** The next OMB meeting regarding NRK Holdings’ appeal will be held July 16,2014 at 10 a.m. Those wishing to speak during the hearing must contact the OMB by May 23. Witness statements must be submitted by June 16. ***
