Great Lakes – Water Level

The water level of lakes Michigan and Huron has dropped over the years.  This has become very obvious and is a concern in the Georgian Bay since it has had impact on water quality, boating, fishing, commercial shipping and shoreline property value.

APPENDIX A

Dear Minister McKenna and Minister Murray,

#FoodAndWaterFirst #ProtectOurWater

The Canada-Ontario Draft Action Plan, Partnering in Phosphorus Control: Achieving Phosphorus Reductions in Lake Erie from Canadian Sources falls short of what’s needed to protect Lake Erie and tackle algal blooms.

Algal blooms threaten drinking water, clog intake pipes, and deter tourists from visiting shoreline communities. In your own estimates, inaction on this issue could cost as much as $272 million annually. If these blooms continue to increase in frequency and size, we could see compromised drinking water quality, more beach closures, and more dead fish washing onto shores.

Canada and Ontario need to rewrite the draft action plan to ensure it includes:

1. Clear timelines concerning when programs will roll out, and when we can expect to see the health of the lake improve;

2. A detailed resourcing plan that outlines what funds are available and what financial resources are required to implement the actions identified in the plan; and,

3. Incentive programs and in-person support services to help farmers reduce nutrient runoff.

We need to work together to ensure Lake Erie remains a viable source of drinking water, a cornerstone of the regional economy, and a truly remarkable ecosystem. Without a robust action plan, we will not reach the ultimate goal: a clean and healthy Lake Erie.

Sincerely,
