Canada’s Cannabis Industry
For the 2015 federal election the Liberal Party ran on a platform that included legalizing recreational cannabis use. When the Liberals won the election, administrations at all levels were spurred into action. Provinces, cities and towns had to decide what they would and would not allow often engaging with the electorate to determine popularity of the cause. Chomping at the bit, some retailers and growers jumped early and got their hands slapped by the law causing confusion.
In June 2018, the Cannabis Act was enacted. Prior to 2018, only medical cannabis use and growers were legal in Canada. After the Act, laws needed to be amended, agreements rewritten, and knowledge needed to spread. Rumours abounded including border guards’ tendencies to check travelers’ credit card histories for cannabis purchases and blocking entry to the USA if any were found.
By early 2019 in Ontario, general consensus held that the cannabis industry was about to explode but all levels of government were doing their best to hold and control primary opportunities for profit. People patiently waited for government to get their acts together.
