Fukushima News (Japan)

On March 11, 2011 a 9.0 magnitude earthquake and resulting tsunami battered Japan, causing 19,000 human deaths and damaging coastal ports and towns with over a million buildings destroyed.  The power supply and cooling systems of three of six reactors at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant were damaged resulting in a meltdown of three cores.   A fourth core also became a problem over the next few days.

Officially, there have been no deaths or cases of radiation sickness from the nuclear accident but over 100,000+ people were evacuated from their homes.  (article)  [70+ USS Ronald Regan crew members sue TEPCO for radiation poisoning]

It is estimated that it will take 40 years to cleanup and decommission the reactors at the Fukushima site. (article)

The issue of nuclear runoff affects more than just Japan; a fish caught near the Fukushima plant in March had 7,400 times the safe limit of radioactive cesium. (article)

Tokyo Electric Power (aka Tepco) is the plant’s operator.

“As a comparison: Chernobyl was one reactor, in a rural area, a quarter of the size of one of the reactors at Fukushima. There was no 'spent fuel pool' to worry about. Chernobyl was treated in-situ...meaning everything was pretty much left where it was while the effort to contain it was made (and very expeditiously I might add) not only above ground, but below ground. “  Christina Consolo, Nuked Radio (article)

This is history in the making and the way the situation is handled will impact the world.

“Given that radioactivity levels across Canada continue to be within normal background levels and that there is no cause for concern, on Thursday, August 11, 2011 Health Canada removed nine supplementary fixed point detectors that were installed in British Columbia and the Yukon in response to the Fukushima nuclear incident.”  Health Canada (www.hc-sc.gc.ca) (article) (Cdn Monitoring Sites)

Comments:

Chairmann Meow:  I'm sick of these Fukushima alarmist websites. Notice how none of them are ever written by actual radiological scientists or published by reputable non-governmental organizations, and none of them even bother to add any meaningful scientific context to their "findings". Let's take this guy's measurements, which he says average 150CPM and which peaks out at 156CPM at one point in the video. If you take the highest measurement of 156CPM and divided it by the specified 3500CPM/mR/h sensitivity level of his model Geiger meter, you get a measurement of 0.04458 mR/h (milliroentgens per hour). Multiply this value by 8766 hours per year to get 391 mR per year, then multiply that by 0.96 to convert to the roentgen equivalent in man (rem) value of 375 mrem--this is the level of radiation deposited in soft biological tissue. According to MIT, the average natural background radiation at sea level is 300 mrem. This increases at higher elevation where Denver has an average 400 mrem. Federal safety standards for fetuses and minors in workplace environment label 500 mrem, or 5000 mrem for adults, as the upper limit of safe. To give further context, acute radiation poisoning is defined as over 1 sievert or 100 rem (100,000 mrem) in a short time period, which at the rate of peak measurement level would take over 25 years to accumulate. Another way to look at that is, at 0.0428 rem/h or 0.0007 rem/m, that is over 142,857 times the peak measurement registered on Pacifica State Beach. (article)

Becquerel[Bq] or Curie[Ci]: radiation emitted from a radioactive material  (1 Ci = 3.7 × 1010 Bq)

Gray [Gy] or Rad[rad]: radiation absorbed by another material (1Gy = 100 rad)

Sieverts[Sv]* or “roentgen equivalent in man”[rem]: how badly radiation will damage biological tissue (1 Sv = 100 rem)

You can convert from Grays and Rads to Rem and Sieverts, but you have to know what kind of radiation it is. For example alpha radiation from naturally occurring Polonium-210 is more damaging to biological tissues than gamma radiation from Cesium-137. Even if you absorbed the same number of Grays from Cesium or Polonium, you would still effectively receive more damaging radiation from Polonium because the number of Sieverts is higher for Polonium than Cesium. (article)

ZR:  FUKUSHIMA Radiation contaminated Alaska Salmon to be distributed across US foodbanks... You know how the Cove blew the lid of the unnecessary dolphin meat trade in Japan? its mercury poisoned meat is subsidized by the government and fed to Japanese school children because there is otherwise no market? well thanks to Fukushima and the west-coast wising up to contamination of salmon with radionuclides such as cesium 137- there are surpluses of the meat - "The U.S. Department of Agriculture last week announced it would use $20 million in existing funds to purchase Alaska canned pink salmon that would go to Americans in need of food assistance."

There is some argument here I don't need to be articulate to spell out - disrespecting existence, animal liberation and anti-nuclear c'est la meme combat, the implications for all sea and land creatures are huge. There is huge unwillingness to get any credible data on the spread of contamination from the nuclear accident - ontop of the pollutants and toxics already in the ocean - the response has been to deny the health effects of contamination by A) stating it is below the arbitrarily set limits of allowable radiation in food (which the USDA increased after Fukushima) and B) not conducting any coherent or comprehensive study of the effects of the nuclear disaster on the environment, animals, and humans. (article)
