St. Mary’s Cement Proposed Bowmanville Underground Expansion Project
CBM (Canada Building Materials) Aggregates, an operating division of St Marys Cement, is proposing to construct and operate the Bowmanville Underground Expansion Project (the Project), to be adjoining CBM Aggregates’ existing licensed quarry area situated on the shore of Lake Ontario within the Municipality of Clarington.
The company is proposing to extract and crush up to four million tonnes of high quality limestone per year and use existing road, rail and dock infrastructure to ship product to market.
The proponent points out that there are mines operating successfully under the great lakes, such as the salt mine under Lake Huron in Goderich.
Opponents are worried about sinkholes in the lake, impacts on migratory birds, additional truck traffic, impacts on well water, impacts on recreational use of Lake Ontario waterfront.
