Proposed Cobourg Marina Expansion

Cobourg’s Heritage Harbour Marina, recognized as one of the best marinas on Lake Ontario, currently offers 197 reserved dock slips (70 transient & 127 seasonal rentals) and has a long waiting list of boaters (175 as of October 2013) who would like to have seasonal docking in Cobourg.
A three-phase marina expansion is proposed encompassing 152 boat slips with additional parking and boat storage facilities, upgrades to the fuel dock and washroom facilities, and the acquisition of boat-handling equipment.
Proponents note that expansion would bring more tourists into the area and say that the economic benefit could only be positive.
Naturalists note that the area is a long standing important bird migratory path attracting hikers, wildlife enthusiasts, and photographers. Additionally they worry about the impacts of habour dredging sludge. They point out that the development benefits are for boat owners only for a short summer season to the detriment of visitors and town residents for the rest of the year.
