Bulk/Bottled Water
When convenience trumped cost for bottled water, a new commodity was born. Water was given a dollar value, which means “free” water is lost revenue. It does not pay to give something away for free.
However, not all people can afford to buy the necessities of life.
To compound the problem, as long as people can buy clean water, there is no requirement to be careful with water in general. Industries and policies can be put in place that put other priorities first, like aggregate and oil/gas extraction (see “fracking”).
Additionally, agriculture, fish, wildlife and recreation rely on clean, fresh, readily available water.
So when we buy bottled water and encourage this exclusive industry -- for convenience -- are we doing a disservice to our society as a whole?
