Overview of Formations
Collingwood Shale
Collingwood shale is an oil and natural gas field between 10,000-12,000 feet below northern Michigan, USA. This area of emerging interest caught attention when Encanada Corp. began buying up mineral rights acreage in 2008. The company drilled their first natural gas well in 2010 in Missaukee County, producing 2.5 mmcfd.
Collingwood shale is 40-45 feet thick and is about 2 miles below the surface. The depth makes drilling expensive, however, some of the counties going to the highest bid at land auction were Kalkaska, Crawford, Charlevoix and Cheboygan.
