Nuclear – Chalk River
2018 – New “Near Surface Disposal Facility” proposal featuring a super-size landfill (seven stories high and the size of 70 HNL hockey rinks) to hold “low-level” waste that contains radioactive uranium, plutonium, cesium, strontium, iodine and tritium (among others). Critics say it’s the wrong plan at the wrong site – surrounded by water, sitting on fractured bedrock, exposed to rain and snow for 50 years until it’s capped. (article)
2016 - Chalk River, a rural village in Renfrew County northwest of Petawawa. The Chalk River Laboratories (est. 1944), the first laboratory created by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, is a nuclear research centre located on the bank of the Ottawa River in the neighbouring community of Deep River. The laboratory produces a significant quantity of the world’s supply of medical radioisotopes. The laboratory also supplies plutonium, in the form of spent reactor fuel, to the U.S. Department of Energy to be used in the production of nuclear weapons. Chalk River was the site of two nuclear accidents in 1952 and 1958, and shutdowns in 2007 and 2009. The reactor licence to produce medical isotopes expired in 2016.
